South Korea Relies on Son Heung-min for World Cup Success

Son Heung-min, commonly known as “Sonny,” made headlines in August when he decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur to play for LAFC in the MLS. His contract extends through next year. At six feet tall, Sonny is recognized as the most famous Asian player in soccer. In South Korea, his popularity rivals that of K-pop. The Los Angeles Times once highlighted his cultural impact in the region.

Sonny left South Korea as a teenager to start his professional career in Germany. He played in the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen. In 2015, he joined Tottenham Hotspur, where he played 454 matches. As the team’s captain, he led Spurs to a UEFA Europa League championship in his last year with the club. This victory was a significant milestone, marking the team’s first major trophy in 17 years.

Sonny’s evolution into a leadership role for both the club and his national team is partly due to his dynamic presence on the field. Known for his creative playmaking, Sonny adapts to different roles when needed. His long stride and quick pace make him a formidable opponent in any position.

Currently, he leads MLS in assists despite a scoring slump with both his club and the national team. His leadership as South Korea’s captain could be crucial in the upcoming World Cup, where South Korea’s biggest group-stage challenge is expected to be co-host Mexico. This will be Sonny’s fourth World Cup appearance, further underscoring his experience and importance to the team.
