Patrick Mahomes has once again secured a significant payday with the Kansas City Chiefs by extending his NFL contract for two additional years. The extension is reported to be worth $239.05 million, bringing the total contract value to $504.75 million through the 2033 season. Notably, the structure of the deal guarantees that the entire $504.75 million will become fully guaranteed over time. With added incentives and potential escalators, this figure may rise to $522.25 million. This marks an unprecedented contract value for an NFL player, demonstrating Mahomes’ immense value to the team.
Starting in 2027, when the new contract terms take effect, Mahomes will potentially earn an average of $64 million per year, setting a new NFL record in average annual value (AAV). Despite the staggering numbers, this extension was not entirely unexpected. In September 2023, Mahomes had previously restructured his deal with the understanding that discussions would resume after the 2026 season.
Currently, Mahomes’ AAV for 2026 stands at $45 million, ranking him 13th among NFL quarterbacks. This is substantially lower than Dak Prescott’s league-leading $60 million per year. The current ranking doesn’t align with Mahomes’ status as one of the top quarterbacks in the league, so an updated deal was anticipated.
In 2020, Mahomes signed a landmark 10-year, $450 million extension with the Chiefs. At that time, it was considered the largest contract in North American sports. Since then, salaries have increased, with nearly half of the NFL quarterbacks now earning around $45 million annually. By the conclusion of his contract, Mahomes’ career earnings from the NFL could approach a billion dollars.
Beyond his NFL contract, Mahomes earns approximately $20 million annually from endorsement deals with major brands such as State Farm, Adidas, Oakley, and Head & Shoulders. He also holds minority ownership stakes in the Kansas City Royals of MLB, Sporting Kansas City of MLS, and the Kansas City Current of NWSL.
At 30 years old, Mahomes is already one of the wealthiest professional athletes, with an estimated net worth of $160 million, indicating his significant achievements both on and off the field.
