Federal Prosecutors Accuse Man of Starting Disastrous Los Angeles Fire

2 weeks ago 0

Federal prosecutors claimed that Jonathan Rinderknecht, 30, ignited a New Year’s Day fire in 2025. This fire later escalated into a major disaster in Los Angeles. Rinderknecht faces three federal charges, including arson affecting interstate commerce. He pleaded not guilty and risks a 45-year prison sentence if convicted.

Prosecutor Matthew O’Brien described Rinderknecht as upset over not receiving a New Year’s Eve invitation. Rather than celebrating, he drove for Uber. After a drop-off near his former residence with an ex-boyfriend, Rinderknecht hiked to a trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. Known as Skull Rock, this site held emotional value for him. A small fire began there just after midnight on January 1, 2025.

The fire, initially small, was known as the Lachman Fire. It smoldered undetected in root systems and reignited a week later as the Palisades Fire. Although the Lachman Fire burned less than 10 acres without destroying buildings, it was not fully extinguished. Firefighters mistakenly thought the fire was out, despite a red-flag warning.

Rinderknecht’s lawyer, Steve Haney, argued his client is scapegoated for the fire department’s oversight. Haney asserted no proof exists tying Rinderknecht to starting the fires. He noted that Rinderknecht contacted 911 repeatedly after seeing the fire begin. Haney claimed this demonstrated Rinderknecht’s intent to stop it.

The Palisades Fire erupted on January 7, 2025, driven by strong winds. It spread from a hillside into neighboring communities, including Malibu, burning over 24,000 acres. Tragically, 12 people died, and 6,800 structures were destroyed. Witnesses accused Rinderknecht of erratic driving and venting anger before the fire. Haney plans to present witnesses to vouch for Rinderknecht’s normal behavior that night.

Rinderknecht allegedly expressed resentment towards wealthy individuals during rides. He reportedly criticized capitalism and mentioned potential motives for arson linked to social inequality.

The Palisades Fire became politically significant during Los Angeles’ mayoral race. Spencer Pratt, a Pacific Palisades resident, criticized incumbent Karen Bass over the incident. Pratt’s criticism centered on her absence during the fire but he did not advance to the run-off election.
