During Game 3 of the NBA Finals, San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama faced significant backlash following an aggressive encounter with New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson. The altercation occurred when the Knicks were executing an offensive play. Wembanyama and Brunson became entangled, with Wembanyama apparently attempting to break through a screen as Brunson clutched his jersey. A replay showed the Spurs player delivering a hard shove to Brunson’s head and neck, nearly causing the Knicks guard to fall.
Brunson reacted by confronting Wembanyama, who appeared to dismiss the incident with laughter. The referees did not impose any penalties or review the play for a flagrant foul, allowing the game to proceed.
Despite the controversy, the Spurs secured a narrow victory at Madison Square Garden, winning 115-111. However, Wembanyama’s action attracted criticism from analysts and former Knicks star Stephon Marbury. Marbury advocated for a strong response against the Spurs’ player.
Marbury expressed his views in a video posted on X after the game, referring to Wembanyama as “dirty” and urging the Knicks to retaliate. “Wemby is an international player. They play dirty overseas. We’re not used to playing dirty in America…watching him throw Jalen…next game I’m gonna pop him in his rib cage,” Marbury said.
Marbury’s comments have sparked debate, with some supporting the idea of sending a message to Wembanyama in the next game. Knicks player Jose Alvarado also issued a warning, suggesting potential retaliation in Game 4. Several analysts have echoed this sentiment.
Marbury, who played for the Knicks between 2004 and 2009, has been joined by other former Knicks players during the team’s 2026 playoff campaign, including Patrick Ewing, John Starks, and Walt “Clyde” Frazier. Among these, only Frazier has won a championship with the Knicks, during his tenure from 1967 to 1977, when the team claimed titles in 1970 and 1973.
Despite Marbury’s fervor for his former team, his advice is seen as poorly timed. Following the Game 3 loss, irate Knicks fans made news by targeting supporters wearing Spurs jerseys.
As anticipation builds, Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and the Spurs is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
