Young Athlete Dies after Lacrosse Accident

In a devastating turn of events, Eliot Abramson, a promising 17-year-old lacrosse player from Mercer Island High School, passed away following a tragic accident on the field. The accident occurred during a college recruiting showcase on June 1, when a fast-moving lacrosse ball struck him at the base of his neck.

The ball managed to slip under his helmet, leading to an immediate loss of consciousness and collapse. Despite being rushed to Harborview Medical Center for emergency surgery, Abramson remained in intensive care for nearly a week before succumbing to his injuries on June 7.

Family’s Tributes and Remembrance

Jessica Abramson-Lott, Eliot’s mother, expressed her grief and shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. She mentioned a comforting thought that Eliot is now reunited with his biological father, Josef, who passed away when Eliot was just three years old. Her tribute read, “While Eliot’s time on earth will end way too soon, we are comforted that he will be in heaven with his dad, making him laugh, playing music with his smile lighting up the room. We’re sure he’ll be doing ‘wall ball’ in the sky and rooting for all his friends.”

Similar Incident Raises Concerns

This unfortunate incident marks the second such tragedy in the lacrosse community within a year. Last year, Dylan Veselic, a 16-year-old player from Ohio, died after a similar injury. These consecutive incidents raise serious questions about safety measures in lacrosse, especially concerning helmet protection.
