Idris Elba remains pragmatic about the idea of becoming the next James Bond. In a discussion with British GQ, he shared his perspective on the rumors circulating about him taking on the iconic role of 007. Elba, 53, expressed doubts about the likelihood of audiences approving a Black actor playing the character.
Elba stated, “I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing. James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And in realistic terms, some markets won’t go for that. Bond is big worldwide, and [audiences] won’t [all] accept a Black male or an African male in the role. That’s not what they prefer culturally.”
Elba addressed the debate regarding race and its impact on his potential casting as Bond. He commented, “Bond is so unrealistic, so a touch of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. Bond should be pure escapism.”
This is not Elba’s first time discussing his potential involvement with the franchise. Earlier in 2023, while speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, he remarked, “A lot of people talk about another character that begins with ‘J’ and ends with ‘B,’ but I’m committed to being John Luther. That’s who I am.”
Elba also spoke to Esquire U.K. about society’s fixation on race, stating, “If we spent half the time not talking about the differences and the similarities between us, the entire planet would change how we interact. As humans, we are focused on race, and that obsession can block aspirations and growth.”
In 2021, Daniel Craig’s character met his demise in “No Time to Die,” leaving the role of James Bond open. Elba responded to related controversy on X, expressing that racial identity does not define his profession as an actor. He asserted, “There isn’t a soul on this earth that can question whether I consider myself a BLACK MAN or not. Being an ‘actor’ is a profession, like being an ‘architect,’ they are not defined by race.”
Amazon MGM Studios announced that the search for the new James Bond is ongoing. A statement mentioned that while specific details about the casting process are not being shared, they promise to update 007 fans once more information is available.
