A manhunt is in progress following the fatal shooting of a Pennsylvania State University student in what may have been an attempted robbery. Billy Schmidt, aged 22, was shot and killed early Saturday morning while returning to his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Billy was just blocks from his home at around 1:30 a.m. when the incident occurred, according to the Philadelphia Police Department. Upon arrival, officers discovered him with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was transported to a local hospital but was declared dead by 1:47 a.m.

“He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul,” said Bill Schmidt, Billy’s father.

Billy’s father shared with ABC7 that his son had been returning from a bar where he watched the NBA Finals with friends. Security footage given to the police shows the sequence where Schmidt requests his phone back, followed by the sound of gunshots. The footage reveals a man tossing a cellphone and another individual running, pursued by Schmidt, who was then shot.

Billy Schmidt was set to graduate in December as a senior at Penn State University. His sudden death has shocked the community, with Billy remembered as a caring person who never harmed anyone.

Police have yet to arrest a suspect. A resident in the area has urged anyone with information to aid the police investigation, expressing a strong desire for justice. “If anyone recognizes anything, I urge them to help,” the neighbor stated.

Billy’s sister, Anna Schmidt, posted on GoFundMe that his loss has left the community in shock. The family has raised over $48,000 since the tragedy occurred.
