Trump’s Opinion on MLB Salary Cap

There is much debate about the need for a salary cap in Major League Baseball (MLB). President Trump strongly supports this idea. He shared his thoughts with OutKick’s Dan Zaksheske aboard Air Force One.

“If you don’t have a salary cap, you don’t have a sport,” Trump stated. “They can’t help themselves. In sports, they can’t help themselves. Football has a salary cap.”

The NFL, NHL, and NBA all employ salary caps. MLB remains the only major North American professional league without this system.

According to Trump, “They should’ve done it a long time ago.” He emphasized how important it is for professional leagues to consider financial controls like salary caps.

Discussion on NIL and Financials

Trump mentioned his administration’s work on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) laws. He likened them to salary caps and noted the financial struggles of major schools.

“You can’t have that,” Trump emphasized. “Nobody can afford that.”

Trump’s Views on Baseball

Returning to baseball, Trump expressed surprise at MLB’s historical financial strategies.

“Major League Baseball — it’s shocking, frankly, that they didn’t put a cap on years ago,” he stated. “They had a chance to do a cap, and they blew it.”

The MLB and MLB Players Association are negotiating new terms in their collective bargaining agreement. A salary cap of $245.3 million has been proposed for 2027.

The current payroll range is significant. The Los Angeles Dodgers have the highest Opening Day payroll at $415.2 million. The Miami Marlins have the lowest at $81.8 million.
