Karen Read Reflects on Acquittal and Public Support

3 weeks ago 0

Karen Read, acquitted of murder and other charges in the death of her former boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, has experienced overwhelming support from the public. This emerged during her first public interview since the acquittal on the Today show.

In response to co-host Craig Melvin’s questions, Read noted that her reception has been largely positive. She stated that people have shown support wherever she goes. She mentioned receiving compliments and even free meals in places like grocery stores, restaurants, and hotels.

Outside the Dedham courthouse during her trial, there was significant support, which she says reflects broader sentiment across Massachusetts and beyond.

Despite the public favor, Read acknowledged her professional struggles. She shared that her professional license has yet to be reinstated, complicating her career trajectory. She is actively working on a lawsuit against entities involved in the investigation of O’Keefe’s death.

The Massachusetts prosecutors attempted to convict Read twice over O’Keefe’s January 2022 death during a blizzard. They argued Read hit him with her SUV and left the scene. Her defense criticized the investigation for misconduct and questionable handling of evidence, pointing to a lead detective dismissed for improper conduct.

The jury’s initial trial deadlocked. On the second attempt, they acquitted Read of all homicide-related charges, convicting her only of drunken driving.

Currently, Read pursues a lawsuit against the Massachusetts State Police and Canton Police Department, alleging misconduct in their investigation, including bias and corruption. Her attorney, Alan Jackson, seeks to highlight institutional failures in law enforcement through this legal action.

Additionally, Read faces a wrongful death suit from O’Keefe’s family. Read declined to comment further on the family’s lawsuit, conveying her past positive interactions with them.
