American Airlines Suspends Routes Amid Rising Fuel Costs

3 weeks ago 0

American Airlines announced a temporary suspension of several flight routes this summer due to rising jet fuel costs. This decision comes as the airline industry faces increasing financial pressure from the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The airline stated that it would adjust services on select routes in August and September. Affected passengers will receive alternative travel options or refunds. The Texas-based carrier pointed to heightened fuel expenses and noted that these changes align with broader industry patterns.

American Airlines clarified that these adjustments are temporary and not permanent route eliminations. The airline emphasized its commitment to maintaining an extensive network, claiming the most flights offered by any U.S. airline.

Travelers may experience additional disruptions, with fewer flight choices and increased travel costs. Airlines globally have reduced flights and schedules, and many are raising fees or cutting perks to manage expenses. The cost of jet fuel, accounting for approximately 30% of airline expenses, has surged due to the conflict.

The International Air Transport Association reported that jet fuel prices averaged nearly $142 per barrel last week. Although prices have dropped since April, they remain significantly higher than the pre-war price of $99 per barrel.

Currently, traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil transport route, remains largely at a standstill. While recent market adjustments show some price cooling, a concrete resolution between the U.S. and Iran is absent, prolonging the energy crisis.

The supply shock affects more than just air travel. Consumers are also dealing with increased costs for gasoline, food, and other necessities.

Further details on specific routes affected by the suspensions in August and September were not disclosed by American Airlines when contacted by The Associated Press. However, reports suggest that six routes will be impacted, notably from Los Angeles to various North American destinations.
