Bruce Pearl, previously the iconic coach of Auburn University’s men’s basketball team, is known for his vocal stances on issues beyond basketball. Currently serving as the Chair of the U.S. Israel Education Association, Pearl is a committed advocate against antisemitism and a staunch supporter of Israel.
In a conversation with Fox News Digital, Pearl addressed his motivations. “Some view it as political; it’s about survival. Jewish people face dwindling places of welcome,” he shared. As a Jewish individual, Pearl’s perspective is deeply personal, shaped by his family’s narrative of seeking refuge in America. “This is the greatest country,” he remarked, emphasizing his patriotism and expressing gratitude for the opportunities and safety his family found in the U.S. after fleeing persecution during the pogroms and the Holocaust.
Despite acknowledging the persistence of antisemitism and racism, Pearl refuses to see these as insurmountable barriers. “Racism and antisemitism are obstacles, not roadblocks,” he said, pointing out that his experiences as a basketball coach with a diverse team underscore the importance of perseverance.
Following the Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, Pearl emerged as a leading pro-Israel voice in the sports arena. He challenges the idea that public figures should avoid political discourse, asserting, “We live in an amazing country with freedoms of speech and thought. I want open conversations about religion and politics.” Pearl views this dialogue as part of his role as an educator and mentor.
At the Manhattan Jewish Experience’s annual event, where he was awarded the Champion of Israel Award, Pearl highlighted the importance of education. “An educated Jew is a proud Jew,” echoed Rabbi Mark Wildes, founder of MJE, emphasizing the necessity of knowledge for self-advocacy. Wildes also noted the intimidation some Jewish communities face from anti-Israel demonstrations.
As society becomes increasingly divided, Pearl maintains faith in sports as a unifying force. He shared personal anecdotes of how sports provided him a sense of belonging. “Sports can be a unifier,” he stated. “On the playground, we pick teams based on ability, not ethnicity or religion. We focus on winning together.”
Concluding, Pearl expressed his desire for future generations. “I want my grandchildren to enjoy the same opportunities I’ve had in this great country,” he stated, highlighting his personal journey of belonging and success.
