Mayor Zohran Mamdani has lent his support to three Democrats running for House seats in New York City through a new television advertisement. This ad aims to boost the candidacies of Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Brad Lander by leveraging the mayor’s popularity and the city’s excitement over the New York Knicks.
The 30-second ad, which aired during the postgame coverage of the Knicks’ Game 1 victory in the NBA Finals, is set on a basketball court with a Knicks’ orange theme. In the ad, Mr. Mamdani states, “This is the team. This is our year.” He highlights the need for new political energy similar to the Knicks’ resurgence.
Mr. Lander and Ms. Avila Chevalier are both challenging sitting incumbents, while Ms. Valdez is vying for an open seat. All three candidates are endorsed by the mayor. The ad was produced by Morris Katz, the mayor’s chief political adviser. The cost of the ad and its regional TV placement is about $110,000, which is being shared among the three campaigns.
Mr. Mamdani emphasized the connection between the candidates and the spirit of the Knicks. “It’s a new era in Knicks’ basketball, and it’s time for the same in our politics too,” he said in a statement. He described the candidates as “embodying a fight, a selflessness, and a love of New York that will serve our city well.”
