Trump Nominates Todd Blanche as Attorney General Amid Controversy

3 weeks ago 0

President Donald Trump announced plans on Wednesday to nominate acting Attorney General Todd Blanche for a permanent position as the leader of the Department of Justice. This decision is expected to heighten tensions in Congress. Blanche, who has a background as a former federal prosecutor and personal defense attorney for Trump, has been the acting attorney general since Pam Bondi’s dismissal in April, according to the Associated Press.

Trump declared, “We are going to make him permanent attorney general,” during a White House event, a moment captured in a video shared by Dan Scavino on X. Newsweek attempted to contact the White House for additional comments via email late Wednesday.

Key Issues

A significant challenge Blanche recently faced involves the proposed $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund.” This fund aims to compensate individuals who claimed to have been unfairly targeted by the government. However, the initiative encountered bipartisan criticism and legal hurdles, prompting the administration to temporarily adhere to a federal court order that blocked the proposal.

On Wednesday night, during The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell on MS Now, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the nomination. He stated, “Todd Blanche is not qualified to be the deputy attorney general, the acting attorney general, and he certainly is not qualified to be the United States attorney general. The role of that particular position is to serve as the people’s lawyer. Todd Blanche has been acting like Donald Trump’s lawyer, which was his former position, but he has failed to transition in terms of behaving in the best interest of the American people.”

Jeffries further highlighted the anti-weaponization fund issue, noting that the administration pulled back its efforts temporarily in response to “intense public pressure.”

This is an ongoing story and further updates will be provided as new information emerges.
