CBS News has dismissed Scott Pelley, a prominent journalist, following a conflict over changes to the country’s leading news program, ’60 Minutes.’ Pelley, aged 68, had been with the network since 1989, serving as a correspondent for ’60 Minutes’ and as a former anchor of ‘CBS Evening News.’
The dismissal occurred a day after Pelley accused CBS editor in chief Bari Weiss of ‘murdering ‘60 Minutes’ during a heated staff meeting. His comments came after the program’s leadership team and two correspondents were ousted the previous week.
Nick Bilton, recently appointed as the new executive producer of ’60 Minutes,’ notified staff about the decision in a Tuesday night memo, expressing that CBS News and Scott Pelley had ‘parted ways.’ CBS News has opted not to make a public statement regarding Pelley’s removal.
In a letter obtained by The New York Times, Bilton informed Pelley that he was ‘terminated for cause effective immediately.’ Pelley was deeply connected to ’60 Minutes,’ having dedicated decades to the program.
In a telephone interview after his dismissal, Pelley discussed the risks he took for the program, citing his experiences in combat zones. ‘I have been in combat in Afghanistan,’ he shared. ‘I have been in combat in Iraq. I have been in the war zone in Ukraine multiple times, risking my life and the happiness of my family because of my devotion to the broadcast.’
