The NBA Playoffs have been challenging. For the first time, I’ve lost a significant playoff bet after publicly sharing predictions. My previous choice for the Finals, the Knicks versus Thunder, did not materialize, and many of my decisions in the last round proved incorrect. However, there’s hope to regain fortunes with the NBA Finals and particularly the MVP market.
The Favorites
Each team features two standout players, with Victor Wembanyama acclaimed as the best in the series. Many see him as a potential future leader in the league for years. If he secures a championship here, his path to greatness becomes more solidified. His unique combination of skills and physical attributes sets him apart. For the Spurs, a championship win likely signals a standout series performance from Wembanyama, yet betting on him at -185 odds is not appealing. The overall series odds for the Spurs are -205, adding minimal value to a bet on Wembanyama.
In contrast, placing a bet on Jalen Brunson for Finals MVP offers better value. The Knicks enter the series as underdogs but are well-rested and have performed strongly throughout the playoffs. Their deep roster makes them formidable opponents. Brunson may not surpass Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in skill, but should the Knicks prevail, he could be a pivotal factor in their success.
Value Options
There are several players who could contend for the Finals MVP. While I won’t explore each in depth, here are some considerations:
Karl-Anthony Towns: Tasked with guarding Wembanyama, Towns is a competent defender but unlikely to dominate. However, if he maintains strong scoring, facilitates plays, and limits Wembanyama’s scoring, he might emerge as a viable candidate.
Stephon Castle: At +5000, Castle is a notable option. His consistent defense played a crucial part in the Spurs’ previous wins, even when turnovers were an issue. If he effectively neutralizes Brunson and the Spurs win decisively, Castle could gain recognition, especially if Wembanyama’s performance is average.
OG Anunoby: With odds of +6000, Anunoby is not the primary scorer but serves as a key asset for the Knicks. If he continues to score effectively and garners attention alongside Brunson, he might lead the team’s scoring in the Finals.
Josh Hart: Listed at +15000, Hart offers underappreciated value. His versatility and potential to achieve a triple-double make him an intriguing candidate. Though Brunson dominates ball handling, Hart’s all-around impact remains significant.
Betting Strategy for the NBA Finals MVP
The Favorites, Wembanyama and Brunson, are clear leaders. While aware of Wembanyama’s favored status, it’s wise to consider it as a lottery chance. The Knicks present realistic opportunities for an upset. Recommended strategies involve placing half a unit on Brunson, while diversifying the remaining amount among Anunoby, Hart, and Castle as promising long shots.
