New Trier High School Celebrates 126th Annual Commencement

The 126th annual commencement for New Trier Township High School’s Class of 2026 occurred on Sunday, May 31, at 3 p.m. The event was held at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates. Following Trevian tradition, the 902 graduates donned white and black formal attire or white gowns. Many wore long-stemmed red roses, creating a striking contrast with the white or ivory dresses.

The ceremony commenced with Campbell Bach from Wilmette presenting the American flag. Bach expressed pride, stating, “I get to represent our country.” Peter Tragos, who became superintendent of New Trier Township High School District 203 in July 2025, addressed the attendees. He remarked, “This commencement may feel like an end, but it’s just the beginning of many great things to come.”

Blake O’Donnell from Kenilworth delivered the commencement speech. O’Donnell noted, “While we are leaving here with diplomas, we are also taking with us the stamina of a class that has already proven it can go the distance.”

Shams Charania, an alumnus from the Class of 2012 and a professional basketball reporter, spoke to the graduates. Additionally, students Cooper Cohen and Lily Dale, both from Glencoe, discussed their class service project with North Chicago Community Partners.

Graduates prominently displayed their long-stemmed red roses. Among them were Morgan Zibell of Winnetka, Rachel Elli of Wilmette, Lexi Circ of Kenilworth, and Mia Ascione of Wilmette. All expressed gratitude for their education. Ascione shared her mixed emotions, “I’m sad but I’m also really excited for the next chapter. I feel very prepared for college.” Circ commented positively, “It was very good.”

Zibell emphasized the esteem associated with the school, “If anyone asked where you went and you said, ‘New Trier,’ it’s like an honor. It means everything.”
