San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car crash earlier this month, leading to injuries that will restrict his involvement at the beginning of training camp. The team announced this on Saturday as the camp commenced.
Shanahan suffered a concussion, a broken nose, several fractured ribs, and injuries to his hands. This information was reported by someone familiar with the injuries, who spoke to The Associated Press under anonymity due to lack of authorization to discuss the matter.
While the team described the injuries as “non-life-threatening,” they expressed gratitude to first responders for their swift work at the crash site last week.
The 49ers will hold their initial practice on Sunday, led by assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster, along with coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer.
Shanahan is heading into his 10th season coaching the 49ers and is well-respected for his offensive skills. Under his guidance, San Francisco reached the Super Bowl twice after the 2019 and 2023 seasons, and made NFC Championship game appearances in 2021 and 2022. His overall record stands at 91-72 in both regular season and playoff games, placing him third in franchise history for wins, behind George Seifert and Bill Walsh.
Despite facing numerous injuries last season, the team finished with a 12-5 record in the regular season and achieved a playoff victory. Shanahan was ranked fifth in the AP NFL Coach of the Year voting.
