In a tragic series of events in Italy’s mountainous regions, at least a dozen skiers, climbers, and hikers lost their lives this past week. The Associated Press reported a total of 13 deaths, primarily caused by avalanches triggered by highly unstable conditions on ungroomed backcountry slopes. These fatalities occurred just as the Winter Olympics kicked off in the area last Friday.
Authorities have assured the public that the Olympic venues located in Lombardy near the Swiss border, Cortina d’Ampezzo in Veneto, and Val di Fiemme in Trentino are secure, well-maintained, and under constant surveillance. Italy’s specialized mountain rescue team indicated that the disasters were brought about by unstable layers of fresh snow, which were so precarious that even the passage of one individual could set off an avalanche.
The National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps stated, “Persistent weak layers within the snow, often concealed by fresh snowfall or winds, create conditions where avalanches can be unpredictably triggered, even by a single skier or climber.”
Federico Catania, a spokesperson for the Alpine Rescue Corps, observed that recent snowfall has attracted numerous enthusiasts to the fresh slopes, unfortunately leading to a proportional increase in accidents and fatalities.
Tragically, over the weekend, Italy’s national fire and rescue service, Vigili del Fuoco, reported incidents where two individuals perished, and one sustained serious injuries in Alpe Meriggio, Valtellina, after being overwhelmed by an avalanche. Additionally, three individuals lost their lives to avalanches in Trentino, and another in neighboring South Tyrol. Separate avalanches near the Marmolada glacier resulted in two more fatalities, while two hikers died along the Apennine range, alongside an ice climber in Valle d’Aosta.
Federico Catania emphasized that skiing in managed areas remains largely safe and free of significant risks. “There is no danger for people skiing within managed ski resorts, and, in particular, no risks to the Olympic sites,” Catania stated, reiterating that these locations are routinely monitored and maintained, ensuring their safety regardless of the Olympic events.
As the Winter Games commenced, Vigili del Fuoco assured the public that they are equipped and prepared to uphold safety for all event attendees. They highlighted that the Italian National Fire Brigade has established advanced rescue measures specifically for the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This strategic approach is designed to protect athletes, delegations, visitors, and citizens, while maintaining the regular rescue services.
