In a tragic incident overnight in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, a Russian drone struck a residential home, resulting in the death of a father and his three young children. Their mother, who is 35 weeks pregnant, was gravely injured, according to officials. The attack completely demolished the brick house, setting it ablaze and trapping the family under debris, as confirmed by the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office.
The victims included a 34-year-old father, his twin boys aged two, and their one-year-old sister. While rescue teams managed to rescue the mother alive from the wreckage, she suffered blast injuries, traumatic brain damage, burns, and hearing loss.
Since Russia’s invasion nearly four years ago, Ukrainian civilians have faced relentless aerial assaults, despite renewed peace efforts led by the U.S. over the past year. According to the U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission, 2025 was the deadliest year for Ukrainian civilians since 2022, with Russia intensifying its air attacks away from the front line. The war claimed 2,514 civilian lives and injured 12,142 people in 2025, marking a 31% increase from 2024.
The drone involved in the Kharkiv strike was a Geran-2, a Russian adaptation of the Iranian Shahed drone. Bohodukhiv mayor Volodymyr Bielyi expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We lost what is most precious — our future,” on his Facebook page. He acknowledged the heartache of the grieving mother and declared three days of mourning, during which national flags will be at half-mast, and all public festivities will be suspended.
Bielyi emphasized, “We will endure. We will remember. We will never forgive this horror on our land.” Bohodukhiv, home to 15,000 people before the war, is situated approximately 22 kilometers (13 miles) from the Russian border. The presence of any Ukrainian military infrastructure near the impacted home remains unclear.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stressing that each strike erodes trust in diplomatic efforts and underscores the need for strong international pressure on Russia and explicit security guarantees for Ukraine to end the violence.
Ukraine accuses Russian forces of numerous war crimes since the conflict’s outset. European bodies have been striving to hold Russia accountable, and the International Criminal Court in The Hague has issued several arrest warrants for Russian officials on charges of war crimes, including President Vladimir Putin for allegedly abducting children from Ukraine.
Zelenskyy mentioned late on Tuesday that Ukraine is implementing significant changes to counter Russia’s aerial assaults, focusing on short-range air defenses and actively training and replenishing new troops. He highlighted the difficulty posed by Russia’s larger military. Last month, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov noted issues like mass desertions and 2 million draft-dodgers as challenges facing Ukraine.
The Ukrainian President has also called for Western allies to supply advanced air defense systems and missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. According to Germany’s Kiel Institute, military support to Kyiv decreased by 13% last year compared to the annual average for 2022 to 2024, partly due to former U.S. President Donald Trump halting American arms deliveries. However, European nations have stepped in, raising their military assistance by 67% during the same period.
Foreign humanitarian and financial aid to Ukraine also declined by 5% over the past year compared to the previous three years. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 129 long-range drones last night.
In another development, a Ukrainian drone strike in the Russian city of Volgograd caused a fire at an industrial facility. The region’s governor, Andrei Bocharov, noted that drone fragments also damaged a nearby apartment building. Additionally, eight Russian airports suspended flights briefly overnight due to drone attacks.
