In a distressing incident, a Russian drone attack targeted a residential home in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, resulting in the tragic death of a 34-year-old former Ukrainian soldier and his three young children. The attack, which occurred on February 11, 2026, also left the soldier’s heavily pregnant wife in critical condition, as reported by Oleh Syniehubov, the regional government head in Kharkiv.
The victims, Grygoriy Shykula and his 2-year-old twin sons along with their 1-year-old daughter, lost their lives when the drone devastated their home in the city of Bohodukhiv. The mother, who was 35 weeks pregnant, was critically injured but was rescued from the debris by emergency services. She suffered numerous injuries, including burns, blast injuries, and a traumatic brain injury, as reported by regional prosecutors.
The Kharkiv region administration shared details of the attack on social media, showing the extent of the destruction. A photograph shared by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine depicted firefighters at the scene, trying to extinguish the flames that engulfed the house following the strike.
Bohodukhiv city has endured frequent aerial attacks over recent weeks due to its proximity to the Russian border, about 13 miles away, according to the local Zolochiv village council. In a Telegram post, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine confirmed the incident, stating, “The Russians once again attacked the private sector of Bohodukhiv with a strike drone, causing a residential building to be completely destroyed.”
The war between Russia and Ukraine, now entering its fourth year since the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, has seen numerous strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly urged international partners to enhance support for Ukraine’s air defense systems to safeguard civilians across the country. As reported by the Kiel Institute in Germany, foreign military aid to Ukraine saw a reduction of 15% in 2025.
Zelenskyy further emphasized the necessity for strict security guarantees for Ukraine. In a social media post, he stated, “Each such Russian strike undermines the credibility of every diplomatic effort to end this conflict and proves time and again that pressure on Russia and clear security guarantees for Ukraine are the real keys to stopping these killings.”
The preceding Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, Russian forces launched 129 drones at Ukraine, leading to the deaths of at least five individuals, along with damage to crucial energy facilities around the city of Zaporizhzhia. This incident happened after a brief “energy truce” declared by President Trump in late January, during preparations for a second round of trilateral talks involving Ukraine and Russia.
This second negotiation round hosted in Abu Dhabi led to the first prisoner exchange in five months between Ukraine and Russia and an agreement to prolong discussions. However, substantial progress towards a broad peace deal remains elusive. Zelenskyy mentioned that the Trump administration has set a June deadline for Ukraine and Russia to settle their differences. He reported that measures could escalate if an agreement is not reached, indicating a firm stance on ending the war altogether.
Additionally, Russian officials reported a Ukrainian drone attack targeting an industrial plant in Volgograd on Wednesday, which led to a temporary closure of eight Russian airports.
