Thomas Frank’s time as head coach at Tottenham Hotspur came to an end on Wednesday, marking his departure after only eight months in charge. His dismissal occurs with the team sitting a mere five points above the relegation zone in the Premier League.
Frank’s stint included guiding Spurs to the Champions League’s round of 16, yet the domestic scene has been far less rosy. A 2-1 defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday was met with discontent from home fans, as Spurs remain winless in the league this year.
“The Club has taken the decision to make a change in the Men’s Head Coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today,” Tottenham announced in a statement. “Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we have been determined to give him the time and support needed to build for the future together. However, results and performances have led the Board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary.”
Frank’s dismissal adds him to the list of coaches who have been unable to settle at Tottenham, now on the pursuit of their sixth head coach in under seven years since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in 2019. Frank, a Dane, took on the role at the previous season’s conclusion after Ange Postecoglou was relieved of his duties despite leading Tottenham to victory in the Europa League, their first trophy in 17 years, and securing a spot in the Champions League.
Prior to taking over Spurs, Frank earned acclaim for his nine-year tenure at Brentford, where he helped elevate the modest London club to a significant Premier League presence. However, Tottenham proved to be a different battlefield, resulting in just seven victories out of 26 league matches under his leadership.
Tottenham’s last Premier League win was December 28, and the recent loss to Newcastle has worsened their league campaign, leaving them with only one win out of 11 matches in England’s top tier. As of Tuesday, Spurs find themselves in the 16th position of the standings, just hovering two spots above the relegation area.
Injuries have plagued the team, with key players like James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, and Lucas Bergvall on the sidelines. Captain Cristian Romero missed the Newcastle clash due to suspension following a red card in the previous confrontation with Manchester United.
After the loss to Newcastle, Frank expressed confidence in retaining his position leading into the upcoming match against Arsenal, stating, “If you do something right, you build something that can last. Of course, we are not in a top position now. Everyone knows — directors, ownership, myself — what position we are in, what we need to improve and what we need to do better. That is what we are working very hard on.”
Frank joins a list of prominent names, including Antonio Conte and José Mourinho, who have been unable to restore Tottenham’s glory. Even Postecoglou’s triumph in securing a major trophy and a Champions League position did not ensure his continued role due to a disappointing league campaign, which concluded with Tottenham landing at 17th place — their lowest since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.
The precarious league form has proven detrimental for Frank as well, with his squad collecting even fewer points than Postecoglou’s did at the same stage last year.
