Tim Curry’s Reflection on Missing Iconic Roles and His Illustrious Career

1 month ago 0

Tim Curry, a performer known for his unforgettable movie roles, recently shared insights into a part he dearly wished he had played. Reflecting on a career that spans over fifty years, Curry revealed during an appearance on "The Academy" YouTube channel that missing out on the role of Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs" still lingers as a significant regret.

“One of my great regrets is that I read the script of ‘Silence of the Lambs’ and I desperately wanted to play Hannibal Lecter,”

he expressed. Despite his interest, Curry’s agent couldn’t secure an audition for him, leaving the celebrated role to Anthony Hopkins, whom Curry acknowledged as having delivered an outstanding performance.

The psychological thriller "The Silence of the Lambs" premiered on Valentine’s Day 1991, featuring Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, an FBI cadet who seeks assistance from the imprisoned cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, to apprehend another notorious serial killer. The film not only achieved over $270 million in global box office earnings but also swept up five Oscars, including the categories of best picture, best actor for Hopkins, and best actress for Foster.

Anthony Hopkins himself once remarked that he initially misjudged the screenplay, thinking it was child-oriented until he thoroughly read it. Reflecting on this during an interaction with Variety, he recounted,

“I was in London in 1989, performing in a play called ‘M. Butterfly’, when my agent sent the script,”

illustrating his initial skepticism.

During a conversation at the 2015 Austin Film Festival, director Jonathan Demme shared that Sean Connery was initially considered for Lecter’s character, but Connery reneged after finding the script distasteful. This rejection opened the door for Hopkins, who had left a strong impression on Demme with his role in "The Elephant Man".

Despite not landing Lecter’s role, Tim Curry carved a niche in portraying distinctive characters. His portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 1975’s "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" solidified his cult-status reputation. His menacing performance as Pennywise in the 1990 "It" miniseries and his entertaining presence as Wadsworth in "Clue" further exhibit his versatile talent.

Curry left memorable imprints in roles portraying the sinister Darkness in "Legend", Rooster Hannigan in “Annie”, and Long John Silver in "Muppet Treasure Island". He also contributed significant voice work to various characters, including Nigel Thornberry in "The Wild Thornberrys".

Reflecting on other opportunities, Curry shared that he auditioned for the part of Marv in "Home Alone" after hearing from director Chris Columbus. Although he didn’t secure that role, Columbus later cast Curry as Mr. Hector, the Plaza Hotel concierge, in "Home Alone 2" alongside Macaulay Culkin.

Commenting on his rapport with the young Culkin, Curry nostalgically recalled,

“Mac used to stay up watching late-night movies and fall asleep in the makeup chair. I liked him. He was a very nice kid.”

Curry was once also considered for the role of Scar in Disney’s "The Lion King" (1994), ultimately portrayed by Jeremy Irons. Concluding his reflections, Curry humorously acknowledged, “That would have been nice.”
