The fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, by federal agents on January 24 has been a catalyst for protests, highlighting community anger and concern. This incident marked the second fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen by federal agents in the city during the month, after the shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, on January 7. Both deaths have been ruled homicides by the county medical examiner.

Amid the unrest, President Donald Trump, in an interview with NBC, acknowledged the need for a “softer touch” in his administration’s immigration policies. This conclusion comes after he ordered a withdrawal of 700 federal agents from Minnesota, indicating a desire for better cooperation with local authorities. However, Trump emphasized the necessity of maintaining toughness, asserting that the administration is dealing with hardened criminals. A Quinnipiac University poll revealed that a majority of American voters believe Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem should be removed from her position in the aftermath of Pretti’s death.
