Susan Lucci, known for her iconic role in “All My Children,” recently shared insights into her life following the passing of her husband, Helmut Huber. Huber, an Austrian-born television producer and chef, passed away in 2022 at 84, following a stroke. Lucci, now 79, candidly discussed her feelings of grief and how she embarked on a journey to rebuild her life without her partner of over 50 years.
Reflecting on her experiences, Lucci admitted facing significant challenges in adapting to life on her own, stating, “There’s talk of hope, and the only thing I hoped for was that he would come walking back through the door.” The couple, who wed in 1969, had been inseparable, making her adjustment particularly difficult.
Faith played a crucial role in her healing process. During this critical time, she found solace in prayer and the support of her spiritual community. She recounted a significant conversation with Monsignor Jim Vlaun, who provided her strength and reassurance.
“I asked him, ‘Do you really believe in the afterlife?’” Lucci shared. His unwavering belief offered her comfort and renewed hope. She learned to cherish the gift of life despite her profound loss.
Since Huber’s passing, Lucci has managed tasks they once handled together, such as renovating their home. This undertaking, though daunting, allowed her to realize her own resilience and capability. She recalled moments where she could smile and laugh again, drawing inspiration from others who have faced similar losses.
In her new book, “La Lucci,” she writes about her emotional journey, hoping to connect with others and remind them they aren’t alone in their struggles. She also emphasized the choice of embracing happiness once more, inspired by a conversation with a woman who had experienced significant personal losses.
“Helmut was very decisive,” she reflected affectionately on their relationship. “He wasn’t pressuring me. He was just trying to convince me in many ways.” Over the years, her love for him only deepened, leaving her with cherished memories.
While Lucci continues to miss her husband dearly, she remains determined to move forward and find joy and purpose. She hopes her story will encourage others facing similar situations to embrace life, share their stories, and choose happiness where they can.
