Russian Comedian Sentenced to Penal Colony for War Joke

2 months ago 0

A Russian court sentenced stand-up comedian Artemy Ostanin to nearly six years in a penal colony for a joke about a war veteran who lost his legs. This conviction is part of an extensive crackdown on those criticizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The incident in question occurred during a performance last year when Ostanin made a quip about encountering a disabled former soldier on the metro, referring to him as a ‘legless skater.’ This clip circulated online, prompting calls from pro-Kremlin circles for Ostanin to be punished for allegedly insulting Russian soldiers injured in the war.

In addition to the joke about the veteran, Ostanin faced charges of inciting hatred and offending religious sentiments due to a separate joke about religion. According to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, Judge Olesya Mendeleyeva announced the comedian’s sentence as five years and nine months in a general regime penal colony.

During his trial, Ostanin, 29, defended himself by denying any connection of his jokes to veterans of what Moscow calls a ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine. ‘I hope no one ever finds themselves in the same situation of brutal legal abuse that I did,’ he remarked in his final court statement, as reported by Russia’s independent media outlet SOTA.

Judge Mendeleyeva, who sentenced Ostanin, was previously sanctioned by the United States Treasury in December 2024 for her involvement in the ‘arbitrary detention’ of Moscow city councilor Alexei Gorinov, who expressed opposition to the war in Ukraine.

Following his arrest last year, Ostanin was labeled as a terrorist and extremist, classifications Russia frequently uses to suppress dissent and target critics.

Since its military action in Ukraine started in 2022, Russia has intensified efforts to silence critics. In November, a Russian court sentenced 18-year-old street musician Diana Loginova for performing anti-war songs. Similarly, a doctor was sentenced to 5 1/2 years for criticizing the war in front of a patient. Other notable imprisonments include Ukrainian singer Susana Jamaladinova and artist Sasha Skochilenko for their antiwar expressions. Prominent journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza received a 25-year sentence for treason after criticizing the war.
