Robert Irwin recently opened up about his time in Los Angeles while competing on Dancing with the Stars. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Irwin expressed his eagerness to return to Australia, admitting that he found driving in the bustling city more daunting than handling crocodiles.
During the interview at the NFL Honors, Irwin shared his thoughts on driving in LA, remarking, “Oh my gosh! I learned to drive in America—it was the first time I’d ever driven on that side of the road, in L.A. That was the most terrifying part of the entire ‘Dancing with the Stars’ experience… was being on the road in L.A.”
Irwin’s participation in Season 34 of Dancing with the Stars earned him the admiration of many American fans. Despite appreciating the support, he holds a special place in his heart for Australia. He commented, “I grew up out and about, you know, in the wilderness of Australia. Being in that L.A. vibe was so incredibly different, but it was also really amazing because I felt so much support from across America, and it felt wonderful.”
The wildlife enthusiast acknowledged the unique experience of being in the city but reiterated his preference for the natural surroundings of his home. “I was excited to get home, but it’s also, you know, equally beautiful to come back to America to see all my ‘Dancing with the Stars’ mates and all of that is really special,” he mentioned. “But Australia will always be where my heart beats from and that’s always where I’ll go back to.”
Irwin’s connection to nature is deeply rooted, as he was raised in Australia with his mother, Terri, and sister, Bindi, following the legacy of his late father, Steve Irwin. The Irwin family continues Steve’s work at the Australia Zoo, a mission they hold dear. Steve tragically passed away in 2006 from a stingray incident.
Despite his love for Australia, Irwin returned to the US for the 2026 Super Bowl, where he delighted fans by bringing a snake as his plus one. “Well, you know, it’s actually always been a dream of mine to come and watch a Super Bowl. So when they said come out and experience it, I’m like, ‘Oh, 100%,’ but I had to bring a snake with me,” Irwin explained, affirming his fondness for wildlife.
