On February 8, 2026, opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa was released after being imprisoned for over eight months. Guanipa announced his release through a video shared on social media, expressing a desire to discuss Venezuela’s current and future state with honesty.
Guanipa, a close associate of opposition figure María Corina Machado, had been detained in the capital, Caracas, since late May. The arrest was based on accusations from Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, who claimed Guanipa participated in a supposed ‘terrorist group’ aimed at sabotaging the legislative elections that occurred that month.
“Today, we are being released,” Guanipa stated in his video. “Much to discuss about the present and future of Venezuela, always with the truth at the forefront.”
Guanipa’s brother, Tomás, dismissed these allegations, asserting that the arrest was an attempt to suppress opposing views. He emphasized that thinking differently should not be considered a crime and referred to his brother as a ‘prisoner of conscience’ under the current regime.
“He has the right to think as he thinks, the right to defend his ideas, and the right to be treated under a constitution that is not being enforced today,” Tomás Guanipa remarked following his brother’s detention.

Guanipa’s release occurred amid increased pressure on the government of acting President Delcy Rodríguez to liberate individuals detained for their political views. Rodríguez assumed the presidency after the U.S. military detained former President Nicolás Maduro last month.
Last month, Rodríguez’s administration declared it would release a notable number of prisoners, responding to a primary demand from opposition groups and human rights organizations, with U.S. support. However, both families of the detainees and human rights groups criticized the slow progress of these releases.
