On Wednesday night in Arizona, a police helicopter tragically crashed while responding to an active shooting incident, resulting in the deaths of both crew members on board. According to officials from Flagstaff police, the helicopter, an Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Ranger model, was offering tactical air support to police and other agencies when it went down, fatally injuring the pilot and the trooper who was also a paramedic.
At the time of the incident, law enforcement officers were engaged in a confrontation with the shooting suspect, who sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was subsequently detained. No other injuries were reported, as confirmed by Flagstaff police.
The AZDPS’s Major Incident Division is set to spearhead the investigations surrounding both the shooting and the helicopter crash, collaborating with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to uncover the events leading to the crash.
A local resident, Amanda Brewer, shared her experiences when interviewed by CBS affiliate KPHO-TV in Phoenix. Brewer reported hearing a sequence of gunshots, firstly three followed by two more, around 8:40 p.m. local time, prompting her to call emergency services. The police were on the scene within minutes, but shortly after, Brewer observed between 15 and 20 additional gunshots.
Brewer noted that she heard the police helicopter hovering above her home after 10 p.m., followed by further gunshots. “You could hear the blades going,” she explained, “Then there was a very large crash; it shook the house. It was startling.” She described witnessing a substantial fire in the wooded area behind her residence, with additional gunshots sounding after the crash.
In light of the unfolding situation, Flagstaff police issued a shelter-in-place order for one neighborhood at approximately 10:15 p.m., notifying residents through a social media announcement.
