The Miami RedHawks triumphed over Buffalo on Tuesday night, with Luke Skaljac leading the charge by scoring a career-high 19 points. This victory marked the RedHawks’ 23rd consecutive win, setting a new record for the longest winning streak in the history of the Mid-American Conference. Miami also maintains the longest active winning streak in Division I men’s basketball this season.
In a closely contested 73-71 win, sophomore guard Skaljac netted 15 of his 19 points in the second half, ensuring the RedHawks’ pursuit of excellence continued. The team was also aided by Brant Byers, who contributed 11 points, and senior guard Peter Suder, who added 10 points and eight assists.
Skaljac expressed his optimism following the game, stating, We keep finding ways to win, and tonight was just another example of that.
Head coach Travis Steele also highlighted the team’s strength, emphasizing, I know we can score, we’re one of the best offensive teams in the country. It’s more about our defense, that’s my whole focus right now.
This season has proven to be a landmark moment for a program that has traditionally not been viewed as a powerhouse in men’s basketball. After over two decades of being unranked, the RedHawks broke into the top 25 last month for the first time since 1999. They are presently ranked No. 23 and are only one win ahead of Arizona’s streak of 22 games.
The RedHawks are on the cusp of joining the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007. The collegiate team’s history is marked by a Sweet 16 appearance in 1999 under the leadership of Wally Szczerbiak and three consecutive tournament bids from 1984 to 1986, during which Ron Harper, the school’s all-time leading scorer and a five-time NBA champion, helmed the team.
Chad Pergram, Fox News’ Chief Congressional Correspondent and a Miami University alum, fondly recalls the exciting days of Harper’s era. We would go over on Saturday afternoon and Millett Hall would be absolutely electric. They have never before or since seen a player like Ron Harper,
he conveyed to Fox News Digital. Pergram reminisced about attending games at Millett Hall as a student.
Though Wally Szczerbiak also had an impressive career, including a significant NBA run, Harper’s time at Miami is often remembered for his outstanding performances and accolades.
In recent years, attendance at Miami’s games fell, but a surge in interest has revitalized the program. Last week, the RedHawks broke their attendance record with 10,640 spectators observing their win over Northern Illinois.
Chad Pergram reminisces about participating in a summer basketball camp at Miami, where Harper was the resident assistant. It’s amazing to see Miami basketball rise to these levels again,
he reflected, remembering the excitement of the mid-1980s.
Questions have been raised regarding the strength of Miami’s schedule; however, a victory in the conference tournament would guarantee their spot in the NCAA tournament without needing the Selection Committee’s intervention.
The Miami RedHawks continue their exceptional season with an upcoming match against Marshall scheduled for Saturday. Observers will be watching closely to see if the team can maintain their record-breaking streak.
