Lawmakers Call for Stricter Oversight on Biolabs Amid Concerns Over Unauthorized Las Vegas Facility

2 months ago 0

Recent findings of a suspected unauthorized biolab within a Las Vegas residence have prompted lawmakers to seek answers and demand tighter regulations over dangerous pathogens. Concerns have been raised regarding possible ties to the Chinese government, intensifying the call for investigations.

Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, stressed the urgency of investigating any potential connection between Jia Bei Zhu, the homeowner known to be in federal custody, and the Chinese government. Zhu had previously been involved in a similar unauthorized biolab incident in Reedley, California, in 2023.

Israeli citizen Ori Solomon, the property manager of the home, was arrested and detained at the Clark County Detention Center. He faces charges related to the improper disposal and discharge of hazardous waste.

In a discussion with Fox News’ Bret Baier on Special Report, Hawley remarked, “We’ve got to remember, Bret, that the Chinese government’s not our friend.” His concerns align with broader fears of Chinese involvement in sensitive U.S. research environments.

Experts caution that this incident might be part of a larger pattern of Chinese nationals being strategically placed in sensitive research roles. Hawley highlighted instances where the Chinese government has funded initiatives to insert Chinese nationals into critical research and laboratory positions within American universities.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that over 1,000 items of potential biological and hazardous materials were primarily found in a locked garage of Zhu’s residence, raising significant security questions. Sheriff Kevin McMahill shared this information during a Monday press briefing.

Potential threats identified include samples of tuberculosis, dengue virus, HIV, and the deadliest type of malaria, which were also involved in Zhu’s prior incident in 2023. Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas emphasized the huge risk, stating, “It wouldn’t take much of these deadly pathogens to kill thousands of Americans.”

Cotton criticized the current lack of stringent controls over these dangerous materials and called for reforms to ensure their safe and proper use, introducing legislation targeting these security lapses. He noted a “clear pattern” involving Chinese presence in potential biosecurity risks.

Both Hawley and Cotton underscored the necessity of determining whether similar biolabs exist elsewhere and whether the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has direct involvement. Hawley noted, “I think we better find out really quick.”
