In a recent development regarding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, a man detained for questioning on Tuesday evening in Rio Rico, Arizona, has been released, according to local authorities. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department reported that the individual was stopped during a traffic stop just south of Tucson, near the US-Mexico border. This action followed the FBI’s release of surveillance images showing a masked individual with what appeared to be a handgun holster near Guthrie’s front door on the night of her disappearance.
The collaboration between the Sheriff’s Department and the FBI led to a court-sanctioned search of a home in Rio Rico. This community, home to about 20,000 people, is situated approximately an hour’s drive south of Tucson and about 15 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Officials indicated that the search, conducted on Tuesday night, would take several hours. By Wednesday morning, the investigative team had vacated the premises, and the area was cleared with the removal of police tape.
Fox News identified Carlos Palazuelos as the individual briefly detained during the traffic stop. Palazuelos expressed that he was questioned regarding his activities and had his phone confiscated but was subsequently released and allowed to return home. He stated that he works as a delivery driver in Tucson and denied any involvement in Guthrie’s disappearance. He acknowledged that he might have delivered a package to Guthrie’s address. Law enforcement reportedly showed one of his in-laws an image of a masked figure from surveillance footage, suggesting a possible resemblance to Palazuelos’s eyes.
On Tuesday, the FBI released brief surveillance clips of a masked person carrying a backpack and what appeared to be a handgun holster in front of Guthrie’s house on the night she went missing. This person was seen manipulating a flashlight and attempting to obscure the doorbell camera with their hand and a piece of plant from the yard.
Authorities have stated for over a week now that they suspect Guthrie was abducted against her will. The last sighting of her was at her home on January 31, and she was reported missing the following day. It has been confirmed through DNA testing that the blood found on the porch belonged to her.
The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, who is 84 years old and the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, has garnered significant national attention. Savannah Guthrie, along with her siblings, has released several videos appealing for their mother’s safe return and expressing readiness to pay a ransom upon receiving proof of life.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has highlighted concerns for Guthrie’s health due to her limited mobility and dependency on multiple medications. The FBI is actively pursuing leads and has erected digital billboards in various major cities, encouraging tips from the public. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to come forward.
