Details of the Case
The man initially taken into custody regarding the mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of ‘TODAY’ co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been released. This development was confirmed by his interview with Telemundo, part of NBCUniversal. Carlos Palazuelos, a delivery driver from Rio Rico, south of Tucson, noticed the search of his home but maintains he did not know Savannah Guthrie and wasn’t involved in the kidnapping. He doesn’t recall delivering anything to the Guthrie residence.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has yet to confirm the release of Palazuelos.
Surveillance and Public Appeal
The investigation took a turn when the FBI released security footage and photos capturing a masked and gloved individual tampering with cameras at the front door of Nancy Guthrie’s home. The footage was taken on the morning she vanished.
After being dropped off at home on the night of January 31, Nancy Guthrie was reported missing the next day around noon.
In light of these developments, Savannah Guthrie expressed her belief on social media that her mother remains alive, urging the public to aid in bringing her home.
Law Enforcement and Ongoing Efforts
Following the release of photographs and videos, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office has been inundated with over 4,000 tips within a single day, adding to a total of 18,000 since February 1. Investigations have broadened to include areas near Tucson and Rio Rico.
Authorities recently blocked a road in Rio Rico while investigating connected to the case. The FBI continues its search efforts, maintaining focus near Annie Guthrie’s residence in Tucson and other strategic locations.
Current Investigations and Public Statements
The recent release of security footage has marked a significant shift in the investigation, with the video being termed as a potential ‘game changer.’ A person, visible without a backpack in one image and carrying one in another, has sparked speculation regarding premeditation. This prompted significant increases in tip calls to the authorities.
Authorities have temporarily ceased public interviews and press briefings, emphasizing their active investigation mode. However, they encourage the public to share any critical information and have reiterated the FBI’s offer of a $50,000 reward for relevant insights leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery.
Examination of Digital Footage
The extraction of video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera was confirmed by FBI Director Kash Patel. Despite initial concerns about video loss due to a lack of subscription, forensic technology enabled the recovery of crucial footage. The recorded images show a suspect interfering with the camera, an act accompanied by ominous implications in the ongoing investigation.
