In an incredible account of bravery, 13-year-old Austin Appelbee from Australia swam tirelessly for four hours, navigating the ocean to seek help for his mother and siblings who found themselves stranded at sea without any life jackets.
On January 30, during what was meant to be a short, recreational beach outing, Austin and his family, including his mother, Joanne Appelbee, and his two younger siblings, encountered unexpected peril. Initially, their outing, which included a kayak and two inflatable stand-up paddleboards, was calm. However, the weather suddenly changed, causing their kayak to overturn and begin taking on water.
Faced with the escalating danger, Joanne Appelbee attempted to tow the paddleboards and her children. Recognizing the urgency, she ultimately instructed Austin to swim towards the shore for help. Reflecting on the tense moment, Joanne said, “Initially, I thought we were going to be fine and Austin would make it back. But as time passed, I wondered why no one had arrived to assist us.”
Austin, who started learning to swim at the age of four, recounted his swim driven by determination and thoughts of his loved ones, as well as positive reminders like his favorite Thomas the Tank Engine characters. Despite the turmoil, his resolve didn’t falter as he focused on his mission, constantly telling himself, “Not today, not today, not today. I have to keep on going.”
As he fought the waves, Austin initially attempted to bring the kayak along but eventually decided to leave it behind, choosing instead to swim alone. “I finally made it to shore and just collapsed,” he revealed.
Upon reaching land, Austin’s ordeal was not yet over. He ran an additional mile down the beach to locate his family’s phone and alert emergency services. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority responded to his call and a rescue boat, later capturing the moment on camera, arrived to aid Joanne and her other children.
Joanne Appelbee couldn’t hold back her praise for Austin, saying, “He’s absolutely amazing. Me and his dad are super proud.” The family is now deeply grateful for the heroic actions that kept them safe, showcasing an extraordinary tale of courage and endurance.
