Controversy Surrounds Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Featuring Bad Bunny

1 month ago 0

The Super Bowl LX halftime show, featuring Latin trap artist Bad Bunny, became the center of widespread criticism from Americans this past Sunday night. Former President Donald Trump labeled it “one of the worst ever” and shared his disdain openly.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump expressed his strong disapproval, stating, The Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER! It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence. He added that the performance, delivered primarily in Spanish, was challenging to understand and was unsuitable for young audiences across the globe.

Trump also remarked that the show contradicts the positive milestones the country is achieving, including historic stock market highs. He criticized the media for potentially giving favorable reviews to what he considered a lackluster show, advocating instead for improvements like a change to the NFL’s kickoff rule.

Conservative media personalities joined Trump in criticism. Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, also weighed in. The dominant critique focused on the show being presented mainly in Spanish, further fueling ongoing discussions about immigration policies and ICE operations.

While critics were vocal, some fans and athletes applauded the performance. Notable supporters included former NFL player JJ Watt and NBA’s Jalen Brunson. The show’s finale featured a message, “The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate is Love,” sparking debate over its intended message.

Bad Bunny’s performance was anticipated as the first Super Bowl halftime show to be sung entirely in Spanish. However, pop singer Lady Gaga made an unexpected appearance to perform a song by Bruno Mars. During the show, Bad Bunny donned a football jersey emblazoned with “Ocasio 64,” speculated by some to reference the initial death toll reported after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, which was later updated to nearly 3,000.

Many viewers opted for Turning Point USA’s alternate halftime show, headlined by Kid Rock and attended by several Pro Football Hall of Famers. The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that President Trump would have preferred the “All-American” alternative show.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the decision to feature Bad Bunny, citing his global popularity and ability to use the platform to bring people together. Goodell emphasized the importance of the arts in unifying people through creative performances.
