Brandon Scott, the Democratic mayor of Baltimore, has found himself in the spotlight due to questions about the expenses from taxpayer funds for his transportation needs. This scrutiny follows a report by Fox Baltimore which highlights that his primary vehicle, a 2025 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, costs $163,495, making it the most expensive government-issued vehicle used by any state official such as mayors or governors in Maryland.
Scott, who has been governing the city since 2020, faced this report by drawing comparisons to President Donald Trump’s vehicle costs and suggesting that factors like inflation and political biases were being neglected. When a reporter questioned him about the cost in a press meeting, Scott described the inquiry as “idiotic” and accused it of being a “right-wing” attempt to undermine him.
“Just because you didn’t get the answer that you wanted in your racist slant, that’s one thing,”Scott stated during the conference.
This encounter prompted significant reactions on social media platforms, particularly from Scott’s conservative critics. Prominent figures and commentators accused him of deflecting the issue by playing the race card and neglecting accountability.
Criticism echoed Scott’s past statements where he had criticized Baltimore’s traditional political scene for valuing appearances over substance. Yet, the choice of a Jeep Wagoneer, a vehicle known for its relatively low fuel efficiency of 14 MPG, has raised eyebrows especially as Scott positions himself as an advocate against climate change.
A spokesperson for Scott’s office has defended the vehicle’s cost, clarifying that $163,495 represents the total project cost, including necessary modifications for safety and communication essential for the Baltimore Police Department’s Executive Protection Unit. This includes emergency modifications like lights, sirens, and enhanced communication systems to ensure the vehicle’s compatibility with police operations.
Furthermore, the spokesperson addressed the procurement process, stating the vehicle was acquired at a standard Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) approved by the Board of Estimates, intending to provide the mayor with reliable transportation because these vehicles typically undergo more significant wear and tear due to their frequent official usage.
The spokesperson contended that the report citing Scott’s vehicle as the state’s most expensive executive taxpayer vehicle lacked comprehensive evidence. They pointed out that the report did not evaluate all jurisdictions and based its assertion on older models, differing vehicle replacement cycles, and varying executive protection protocols.
