On Wednesday, Capitol Hill witnessed a heated confrontation between House Democrats and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a contentious hearing. The event, filled with shouting matches and heated words, highlighted the tension between the parties. At one point, Rep. Maxine Waters of California, a leading Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, directed criticism at Chairman Rep. French Hill of Arkansas, due to Bessent’s continuous interruptions. Waters, frustrated by her inability to speak, repeatedly declared her intent to reclaim her time as Bessent talked over her questions.
Bessent retorted Waters’ remarks, questioning her dignity. The discord revolved primarily around President Donald Trump’s tariffs, specifically those impacting the home building sector. This exchange took place during a scheduled discussion on the annual report presented by the Financial Stability Oversight Council, aiming to assess the U.S. financial system’s stability.
Democrats, echoing Waters, consistently used the “reclaiming my time” phrase throughout the meeting. Massachusetts Rep. Stephen Lynch was also involved in a tense dialogue with Bessent. Lynch inquired about a deceleration in corporate investigations and pressed Bessent to respond thoroughly, only for Bessent to indirectly blame the administration of President Biden. Lynch urged for responsive answers, emphasizing the necessity for a productive hearing session. Rep. French Hill, the committee’s Republican chair, had to intervene multiple times, reminding Bessent to respect the time allocated to the members.
An additional confrontation ensued between Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio and Bessent regarding the utilization of the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund for housing. Beatty demanded a clear yes or no answer, while Bessent avoided a direct reply.
“I’m trying to be respectful, but you’re not going — you’re not going to do what you want to do on my time,”
Beatty remarked when Bessent failed to provide a straightforward answer.
Following up, Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York questioned Bessent about reports involving President Trump’s cryptocurrency firm allegedly selling a $500 million stake to a member of the Emarati royal family just before inauguration. Meeks asked if Bessent planned to investigate thoroughly. Bessent responded by stating that the matter would be handled by an independent agency and diverted the topic to Meeks’ 2006 trip to Venezuela.
Frustrated, Meeks accused Bessent of protecting the President rather than serving the American people. Amid the clamor, Chairman Hill reminded attendees about maintaining decorum, while Republican Rep. Andy Barr of Kentucky apologized to Bessent for the frenzied environment.
Democrats voiced disapproval over the meeting’s conduct. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri lamented that the hearing was embarrassing, urging a focus on national issues over personal attacks. Similarly, Rep. Juan Vargas of California forewent his prepared inquiries, critiquing the hearing for its lack of productivity and expressing disappointment in Hill’s leadership during the session.
