Anthropic, once an underdog in the field of artificial intelligence, is making waves in the industry by raising $65 billion in new funding. This increase in financial backing has propelled Anthropic’s valuation to a substantial $900 billion, surpassing OpenAI’s previous valuation of $730 billion.
Based in San Francisco, Anthropic has been gaining attention for its rapid growth. Recently, the company has engaged with the Pentagon on the strategic use of AI in military applications. It has also released a noteworthy AI model called Mythos, which claims to excel at identifying and leveraging hidden vulnerabilities in software systems. Additionally, Anthropic has offered guidance to Pope Leo XIV on his papal encyclical, advocating for the protection of humanity from AI’s disruptive potential.
The announcement on Thursday officially established Anthropic as the leading AI start-up globally, surpassing OpenAI. The firm has introduced a new advanced AI model, Claude Opus 4.8, which demonstrates enhanced capabilities in generating computer code, making it a significant improvement over its predecessor.
Leading investors such as Greenoaks Capital, Sequoia Capital, Altimeter Capital, and Dragoneer Investment Group spearheaded this financial boost, resulting in Anthropic’s valuation almost two and a half times greater than its previous $380 billion valuation just three months ago.
This surge in funding highlights Anthropic’s prowess in developing AI that excels at software code creation, turning it into a lucrative business. Since refining its AI coding technology last November, the company has attracted hundreds of clients ready to pay for its software. Anthropic revealed that its expected revenue, based on current performance, reached $47 billion this month.
“This funding will help us serve the historic demand we are experiencing; stay at the research frontier and bring Claude to more of the places where work happens,” stated Krishna Rao, Anthropic’s chief financial officer.
