Germany’s Military Commitment in Lithuania

Chef Liutauras Ceprackas, based in Vilnius, expressed concerns over a possible Russian invasion. The Lithuanian army, comprised of 15,000 soldiers, seems insufficient to him for preventing such a threat. Skepticism extends to NATO’s response under American leadership.

Ceprackas, aged 51, appreciates the significant presence of German soldiers in his country. He believes any hostile action against German troops would escalate into a conflict with Germany, thus serving as a deterrent against Russian actions.

The establishment of Germany’s 45th Armored Brigade in Lithuania holds historical importance. It is the first full battle brigade stationed outside Germany since World War II, demonstrating Europe’s transformation in light of rising Russian tensions.

Germany’s Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, emphasized the importance of this deployment during the brigade’s investiture ceremony in Vilnius. There, he proclaimed the intention to construct Europe’s largest conventional army, illustrating Germany’s expanding defense role.
