Friday marked a memorable day for Reese Rourke and the Lincoln-Way West softball team. In her second game back after a long absence, Rourke hit two home runs, guiding her team to a significant win. The senior shortstop played a key role in the Warriors’ 2-1 victory over Lockport during the Class 4A Lincoln-Way West Sectional championship in New Lenox.
Reese Rourke, committed to NC State, showed impressive skills by going 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double for Lincoln-Way West, which now holds a 27-7 record. Teammate Paige Seivert contributed with two hits, while Abby Brueggmann was credited with the pitching win. On the opposing side, Lockport’s Taylor Lane achieved three hits. Giavanna DiCiolla added an RBI single, and Bridget Faut struck out four batters.
This sectional title was a first for Lincoln-Way West’s program. The team is set to face Edwardsville, which boasts a 29-9 record, at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in the Illinois Wesleyan Supersectional.
Rourke’s emotional reaction resonated with her teammates. Brueggmann commented on the excitement in the dugout, especially since Rourke’s homerun brought tears of joy. Rourke has been dedicated to improving, and her hard work paid off in her outstanding comeback.
Earlier in the season, Rourke faced a setback with a wrist fracture requiring surgery, limiting her play. She participated in a few games in early May before her full return. Her determination and skill were clear as she hit a home run and a double in her second game back.
Her second home run helped the team solidify their lead, enabling Brueggmann to effectively manage the game by striking out three and leaving nine runners stranded.
Rourke has a history with the team, having been the ace pitcher as a freshman. Her switch to shortstop has been possible thanks to Brueggmann’s contribution. Rourke appreciates her teammate’s support, both on and off the field.
Lincoln-Way West coach Heather Novak expressed her pride in Rourke’s resilience and contribution to the team after her recovery. Novak recalled the initial disappointment surrounding Rourke’s injury but was thrilled to see her excel.
The team’s victory was reported by Tony Baranek, a freelance journalist for the Daily Southtown.
