Trump’s Lincoln Memorial Pool Revamp Claims Scrutinized

4 weeks ago 0

In April, President Donald Trump announced plans to renovate the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He hired a contractor to coat its large granite basin, stating the project would cost $1.5 million. At a Cabinet meeting, he criticized previous administrations for allegedly spending ‘hundreds of millions of dollars’ to repair the site. Former President Barack Obama oversaw a significant renovation, but the costs did not match Trump’s claims, and no major work occurred under the Biden administration.

Federal spending records reveal that Trump’s project costs exceed his estimates. The more than 2,000-foot-long pool, originally constructed in the 1920s, is located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The pool is a historic site where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his iconic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.

Examining the Details

Trump’s Statement: ‘The Biden administration and the Obama administration spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to get it to work, and they failed. And we’ll be spending, you’ll give me a number, but I think it’s a very low number.’

The Facts: This assertion is inaccurate. The Obama administration spent approximately $34 million on a major two-year reconstruction ending in 2012. No major repairs were undertaken during the Biden administration. Trump estimates his pool renovations at $1.5 million to $2 million, but records indicate at least $14.8 million in project-related contracts.

The renovations under Obama addressed problematic issues like stagnant water and a leaking, sinking pool constructed on land dredged from the Potomac River. Engineers redesigned it with a circulation system using water from the Tidal Basin instead of municipal water. The pool was also made shallower, tinted gray for greater reflection, and new paved paths were added.

The reconstruction cost was reported by the Associated Press at $34 million, with an additional $1.3 million in related contracts. Despite these efforts, the pool continued to leak and experience algae growth during its later years.

Biden Administration’s Approach

Chuck Sams, director of the National Park Service for most of the Biden administration, stated that a comprehensive rehabilitation estimated at over $100 million was not pursued. The pool underwent annual cleaning to control algae during Biden’s tenure. White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers stated that, due to Trump, the Reflecting Pool would be restored for America’s 250th celebrations at a fraction of prior costs.

Current Renovations Under Trump

In an April Oval Office appearance, Trump announced plans to coat the pool with an ‘industrial grade pool’ surface in ‘American flag blue’ for $1.5 million. He cited estimates of $301 million and three years to replace the granite surface as prohibitive, opting instead to cover the aging granite.

Trump described the ongoing work, stating that the pool had been steam-cleaned, fumigated, and coated with sophisticated rubber to prevent leaks. He mentioned that cleaning crews removed ‘more than 10 dumpsters of garbage.’ Interior Department spokeswoman Katie Martin noted the project’s costs reflect the accelerated timeline, requiring more resources to complete the leak prevention coating by the 250th anniversary.
