Lake Central’s senior first baseman, Tyler Thuftedal, is excelling at the plate at a crucial moment. After a slow start, he’s found his confidence. Thuftedal acknowledged, “I didn’t get off to the start I wanted. But these last few games, I’ve been feeling like myself. I’m feeling more confident and contributing more.”
Thuftedal’s impact was evident during the Class 4A Crown Point Sectional first-round game against Munster. In this playoff debut, the Calumet College recruit went 2-for-2, hitting two doubles, driving in a run, and scoring in Lake Central’s 13-3 victory over five innings. Remarkably, he was intentionally walked with one out and runners on second and third in the fifth inning. Thuftedal noted, “I was surprised. That was a first for me, especially given the year I’ve been having. It’s been rough, but I’ve found my form.”

Sophomore designated hitter Jacob Forystek contributed to the Indians’ (22-8) win by going 3-for-4, adding an RBI, scoring three runs, and stealing two bases. The team will face Morton (7-13) in a semifinal. Batting seventh, Thuftedal raised his average to .215, having entered the game with three doubles for the season.
Lake Central coach Mike Swartzentruber observed, “He’s a senior who struggled until recently. I promoted a sophomore to play first base, rotating with Thuftedal. This transition sparked his performance. In the last four or five games, he’s been outstanding.”
Last season wasn’t easy for Thuftedal, who missed the final month-plus due to a slipped disk after going 2-for-7 and pitching 10 2/3 innings. His motivation increased while sharing playing time. “That lit a fire under me because I wanted to play every day,” Thuftedal shared. “I’ve become more aggressive, swinging without hesitation.”
Junior catcher Brayden Walls, a Ball State recruit, commented, “He’s been coming alive recently. His bat’s come alive, which is great to see.”

Munster (23-7), tied for the Northwest Crossroads Conference title with Andrean and rated No. 5 in the state poll with Valparaiso, led 3-0 in the first inning. Lake Central responded with five runs in the third, including a key two-run single from junior third baseman Connor Friesema and Thuftedal’s run-scoring double. In the fifth, the Indians exploded for eight runs, featuring Walls’ three-run homer.
“We put together good at-bats, got on the board — that helped. And then you can relax, and then the hits, you just get on a roll. Sometimes it just snowballs,” said Swartzentruber.
Sophomore left-hander Owen Kopercinski rebounded after allowing three runs in the first, retiring 10 straight batters. He walked a batter with two outs in the fifth but secured the final out with a strikeout. Kopercinski had previously pitched six innings, allowing one run in a close loss to Munster on May 1. The team has since gone 14-2.
Swartzentruber remarked, “He’s the right choice for the game. His mentality suits handling these situations well, even as a sophomore.”
Reflecting on the game, Thuftedal stated, “This was electric. It was the most fun game of the season. Being part of it was great.”
