An accident between a train and a school bus took place on Tuesday at a level-crossing near Buggenhout station, approximately 14 miles from Brussels. Emergency services were seen at the site of this tragic incident.
The collision resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two teenagers. The victims also comprised the bus driver and an adult who was accompanying the children. This information was reported by RTL TV, citing Transport Minister Jean-Luc Crucke.
Crucke added that two other individuals suffered severe injuries. Security footage revealed that the level-crossing barriers were down at the time of the accident.
Interior Minister Bernard Quintin expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “It is with deep sadness that I learned of the tragic accident that occurred in Buggenhout.”
There has been no immediate response from Belgian police representatives regarding the incident.
Belgium’s railway network, known for its density, has seen several level-crossing accidents in the past. According to Infrabel, the railway infrastructure operator, there were five fatalities in such accidents in 2025, marking the lowest count since 2020.
