Lindsey Vonn, the renowned Olympic skier, recently underwent surgery for a fracture in her left leg. This news came after her significant crash during the women’s downhill event at the Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Despite battling a ruptured ACL, Vonn was determined to compete for a medal. Unfortunately, she lost control shortly after starting her run, crashing in the initial sector and experiencing severe pain.
Following the accident, Vonn was airlifted by helicopter from the mountain and initially treated at a clinic in Cortina. She was then transferred to the Ca’Foncello hospital in Treviso, where officials confirmed she is being attended to by a team of experts. The U.S. Ski Team announced that Vonn is in stable condition and receiving care from both American and Italian medical professionals.
U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s chief of sport, Anouk Patty, remarked on the incident: This sport’s brutal and people need to remember when they’re watching (that) these athletes are throwing themselves down a mountain and going really, really fast.
On a positive note for Team USA, Breezy Johnson secured the gold medal in the same event, earning the country’s first gold at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games. Johnson, who missed the 2022 Games due to a knee injury, expressed empathy for Vonn’s situation, commenting on the emotional challenges such accidents bring.
I don’t claim to know what she’s going through, but I do know what it is to be here, to be fighting for the Olympics, and to have this course burn you and to watch those dreams die, said Johnson.
Johan Eliasch, the president of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, described Vonn’s crash as tragic, yet part of the sport. He also acknowledged Vonn’s contributions: I can only say thank you for what she has done for our sport, because this race has been the talk of the games and it’s put our sport in the best possible light.
As the skiing community reflects on the event, Vonn’s recovery and future in the sport remain topics of interest. Fans and fellow athletes continue to extend their support and wishes for her swift recovery.
