The discussion on NBA officiating standards has been reignited by Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks. He has accused the Oklahoma City Thunder of receiving favorable treatment regarding foul calls due to their reputation.
Brooks argues that the defending champions benefit from more leniency related to flopping, while other players face stricter scrutiny. This criticism adds to the ongoing narrative about the Thunder’s ability to draw fouls and reach the free-throw line more frequently than some believe is warranted.
In an interview shared on YouTube, Brooks elaborated on his viewpoint. He suggested that officials might judge players differently based on reputational factors. Refs talk, and I think they have like a list of floppers. I think OKC flops a lot, but they don’t get called for it because they got a pedigree. It’s all pick and choose, and you got to realize that refs are human, they’re not robots, so they’re going to see what they see and call what they call,
he stated.
Brooks’ discontent is not new. During the 2026 playoffs, following Phoenix’s loss to Oklahoma City in Game 2 of their first-round series, he expressed frustration with the officiating. Particularly, he was critical of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had a stellar performance with 37 points and perfect accuracy on nine free-throw attempts.
He advocated for the playoffs to allow more physical play, voicing his displeasure at players who he feels exaggerate contact to earn foul calls.
