A woman was removed from a Florida county commissioners meeting after playing a recording of the Islamic call to prayer. The incident happened during a public comment period focused on a proposed mosque expansion. Concerns arose over the zoning and agenda language associated with the project.
The meeting of the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners was underway when the woman, wearing a burka, approached the podium. Instead of speaking, she played the audio recording. Her intentions—whether a protest or prank—were unclear.
The audio lasted nearly a minute before Chairman Dave Eggers intervened. He stated that county rules require verbal comments, not recordings. Eggers instructed the woman to stop the audio.
Despite his request, the woman continued, leading a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office deputy to escort her out. Her removal led to shouting and disagreement among the audience members. Eggers requested the crowd to show decorum and explained the board’s rules. “We ask you to come here and make comments, and that was not a comment,” he clarified.
The event occurred amid discussions on the mosque’s planned expansion. The board had voted earlier to approve a land-use amendment. This change allows for the construction of a larger building for the Masjid Al Rahman mosque.
During the meeting, several residents voiced their concerns about the expansion. One speaker linked the mosque’s presence to broader ideological issues affecting women’s rights. “It is about the big picture and the long term,” she warned.
However, support for the mosque was also present. A resident stated the mosque’s intention is merely to align the building with religious traditions.
Commissioner Vince Nowicki raised questions about the descriptive language used in official documents. “Residents read these materials to understand what is being proposed,” he emphasized, advocating for clarity in all cases.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the woman was escorted out without further incident and won’t face charges.
