Assistant Attorney General Defends Noncitizen Voter Investigations

59 minutes ago 0

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon appeared on CBS’ “60 Minutes” to defend the Trump administration’s actions regarding noncitizen voters before the midterm elections. When questioned by host Lesley Stahl about the motive behind these investigations, Dhillon insisted that they are not intended to create distrust in the election system. She said, “There are thousands of cases under review. The Biden administration prosecuted some for noncitizen voting, too.”

Stahl expressed skepticism about the numbers, describing them as “tiny.” Dhillon countered, “We’ve been in office for less than two years. Investigations take time. We are examining thousands of potential cases.” Her remarks came amid increased scrutiny of voter rolls, especially after noncitizens were found registered in New Jersey.

Dhillon has committed to investigating every credible lead related to illegal voting. She aims to prosecute based on evidence rather than focusing solely on widespread fraud. Her approach marks a considerable change from previous administrations. Her statement followed news from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill about noncitizens on voter rolls.

“Every illegal vote cancels out the vote of a lawful American citizen,” stated a spokesperson for the DOJ. The department aims to vigorously enforce the law to protect election integrity.

The interview with “60 Minutes” also covered questions about potential deployment of ICE agents at polling sites and concerns over President Donald Trump contesting midterm results. Dhillon assured that there are no plans to send ICE agents to the polls. On contesting election results, she remarked, “Absent some unexpected contingency, voting and counting should proceed normally.”

After the segment aired, Dhillon expressed concerns on social media about how her interview responses were edited. CBS has not commented on her statement.
