Israel Marks Tragic Anniversary Amid Political Turmoil

2 hours ago 0

Three years have passed since a devastating attack by Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages in Israel. Israelis are now commemorating this tragic event, which continues to shape the nation’s psyche and regional dynamics.

Memorials and Aftermath

Memorial services for the victims of the October 7 attacks have been held at various sites, including homes, roadsides, kibbutzim, and the Nova music festival venue, where over 360 lives were lost and 44 hostages were taken. The assault led to an Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of over 74,000 Palestinians, widespread famine, and devastation. The conflict has expanded to involve Lebanon, Syria, and other regions, leading to global criticism of Israel’s actions.

Today, approximately 80% of Gaza’s structures are damaged, and most of its population of over two million people have been displaced. Despite a fragile ceasefire holding for nearly a year, deadly Israeli strikes continue.

Political Context: Upcoming Israeli Election

The memorials unfold amid a heated Israeli election. In 20 days, voters will decide whether to re-elect Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in power during the Hamas attacks. His opponents blame him for failures before and after the attacks, including allowing Qatari funds into Gaza and ignoring warnings from the UAE.

Netanyahu, however, points fingers at military and security leaders, denying he had received warnings. His campaign emphasizes Israel’s resilience and its military actions against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. A poll by the Israeli Democracy Institute shows 62% of voters view the attacks as a crucial election issue.

Lasting Trauma and Healing

The residents of Kibbutz Nir Oz, one of the hardest-hit areas, continue to cope with trauma. Lucas Cunio, a resident, shared his struggles with NBC News, recounting frequent flashbacks and nightmares. To aid his mental health, Cunio joined a surfing club, finding solace in the activity.

Hamas’ Perspective and Global Impact

Abu Obaida, a spokesperson for Hamas’ military wing, praised the attackers, acknowledging Gaza’s suffering but highlighting the impact on global power dynamics. He acknowledged Iran’s support and other militant groups’ roles in the conflict.

Recent casualties in Gaza include four fatalities in the last 24 hours, as per the Health Ministry. The ceasefire has seen 1,467 deaths since its inception.

Global Reactions and Rising Antisemitism

Commemorations were held in Tel Aviv, with mourners conducting moments of silence and memorial installations. The last year has been the deadliest for antisemitic attacks in three decades, with significant incidents in countries with large Jewish populations.

Numerous vigils and remembrance services are underway globally, marking the anniversary of past attacks and ongoing tensions.
