Attorneys for former Olympian David Hearn are urging federal watchdogs to conduct thorough investigations into his arrest and prosecution. This follows a judge’s decision to clear Hearn of wrongdoing concerning damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Newsweek obtained a letter from Hearn’s attorneys, addressing the inspectors general of the Departments of Justice and Interior. The attorneys are demanding independent probes into the events surrounding Hearn’s arrest on June 19 and his subsequent prosecution. A judge dismissed the case with prejudice, emphasizing the need for clarity on what led to Hearn’s treatment.
According to the letter, various employees from the DOJ and DOI deprived Hearn of his liberty, wrongfully indicted him, and defamed his reputation. Notable figures mentioned include Jeanine Pirro, Doug Burgum, and Donald Trump. The attorneys assert that the federal government’s weight was unjustly used against Hearn to cover up a botched renovation of the Reflecting Pool.
This administration threw the entire weight of the federal government into prosecuting Davey Hearn, and their actions surrounding his arrest and indictment demand full accountability.
Federal prosecutors confirmed that the damage was due to flawed installation, not vandalism, leading Judge Todd Edelman to dismiss the case. Attorneys call for investigations into Hearn’s arrest, detention, and the handling of evidence, especially concerning actions by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.
The attorneys criticize the USAO-DC for charging Hearn despite evidence that the Reflecting Pool’s issues came from installation defects. Pirro dismissed the case in July, recognizing a contractor’s role in the mishap during a rushed project deadline.
Hearn emphasized the importance of vigilance against power abuses, stating that if these events can happen to him, they can happen to anyone. His remarks highlight a fight for moral integrity within the nation.
