Chicago Leaders Express Grief Over Tragedy
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed deep sadness following the fatal stabbing of a 7-year-old girl on the city’s South Side. The incident took place on Saturday, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Details of the Incident
The victim, identified as Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon, was reportedly walking with her family on South Cottage Grove Avenue. At approximately 11:55 a.m., an adult woman approached her, wielding a sharp object, and inflicted multiple stab wounds to her back. This was confirmed by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) in a statement shared with Newsweek.
Chacon was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. The responsible party, detained by bystanders until police arrived, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to a hospital. She currently remains in police custody.
Community and Official Reactions
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office listed the cause of death as homicide due to multiple stab wounds. The attack, described by police as unprovoked, has deeply disturbed local residents and city leaders. Mayor Johnson, in a message shared on X, conveyed his heartbreak over the incident, emphasizing that no family should have to bear the pain of losing a child in such a manner.
He assured ongoing support for the victim’s family and committed to ensuring justice is served.
Security Footage and Witness Accounts
Security footage from nearby cameras reportedly showed Chacon walking hand-in-hand with a woman just before the attack. Further video evidence captured bystanders rushing to the scene and actively intervening, although the suspect was not visible at that point.
Residents expressed profound shock and sorrow in conversations with ABC7 Chicago. Witnesses relayed their disbelief at how a young child could fall victim to such violence, underlining the tragedy of the situation. Denesta Freeman, a resident, shared her frustration with the prevailing violence, questioning the current state of the world.
Another mother, choosing to remain anonymous, emotionally related to the tragedy due to her own daughter’s age. She conveyed her personal anguish, feeling as though she had lost her own child.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have yet to identify the suspect publicly, reveal charges, or provide insight into a potential motive. The investigation is being managed by CPD’s Area Two detectives. Community leaders continue to call for support for Chacon’s grieving family during this difficult time.
