Republicans Invest $14 Million More in Ohio Senate Race Amid Concerns

2 hours ago 0

National Republicans have added $14 million to Ohio’s competitive U.S. Senate race in an effort to support Senator Jon Husted. This increase highlights the party’s concerns over maintaining control of the seat previously held by Vice President JD Vance. The Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), closely linked to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, announced this investment, bringing their total financial support for the race to $93 million.

Significance of Ohio’s Senate Race

Ohio’s race is pivotal in the 2026 Senate election map, as Republicans are defending a narrow majority in the Senate. Losing Ohio may hinder their chances of keeping control. With few true battleground races left this cycle, Ohio has become a key focus for both parties. The SLF Executive Director Alex Latcham emphasized the need to re-elect Husted and criticized Democratic contender Sherrod Brown’s long record.

Husted, formerly Ohio’s lieutenant governor, was appointed by Governor Mike DeWine to fill the vacancy left by Vance. The November election winner will serve the remaining two years of the term.

Competitive Nature of the Race

Despite Ohio’s recent rightward shift, the significant financial commitment underscores Republican unease about Husted’s position. While considered Lean Republican by the Cook Political Report, NBC News views the race as a toss-up. Public polling shows a tight contest between Husted and Brown, with Brown attempting a comeback after a defeat in 2024.

Brown is a prominent Ohio Democrat known for appealing to working-class voters, challenging recent Democratic difficulties in Ohio. The campaign spending has made this one of the most expensive races nationwide. The Senate Majority PAC increased its spending by $20 million earlier this year to bolster Brown’s chances.

Data from AdImpact reveals nearly $250 million already spent on advertising, with an additional $137 million projected by Election Day. This significant investment indicates the national importance of the race.

Republicans’ Concerns

Democrats have targeted Husted over the expansion of data centers in Ohio, linking him to policies facilitating their growth. This issue has raised Republican worries, especially as local opposition grows amid the rise of artificial intelligence.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee expressed concerns in an internal memo, identifying the data centers as a major challenge for Husted’s campaign.

SLF’s increased investment reflects a broader trend of bolstering Republican-held states facing competitive challenges. Recently, SLF allocated $20 million more for Iowa’s Senate race, totaling $49 million there.
